Totes Obsessed: CLOVER CANYON

On a masochistic perusal of the web's finest e-retailers, I stumbled upon this darling brand, Clover Canyon, hailing from California. Fun Fact: the line's original graphic designs are inspired by classical and contemporary art, and the history of print and textiles, and every collection is designed, patterned, cut and sewn in-house to keep it truly Made in California. Amurrica!

Clover Canyon's Spring 2012 collection represents everything I want to wear this season: the only thing that screams "me" more would be me, wearing it, while screaming my own name. Did I mention that the price point is dece too? Hashtag, totes amaze!

I Don't Know How She Does It

I'm not talking about Sarah Jessica Parker's ~~box office hit~~ movie, but rather another celebrated screen sensation: Snooki! I don't know how she does it! I tried to get a tan in Hawaii, and as you can see from the photos below, my skin is the same colour as my skirt. And why such a high collar in the Hawaiian heat, you ask? Aside from covering up my tig ol' bitties, I've got a bout of heat rash. When did I come down with a case of ginger skin? I blame you, ozone layer. Anyway... with a lot of gratuitous leg (you're welcome, 0.519% straight male readership) I give you an outfit in bright red and white, which should also give you an idea of what's going on underneath it. Yes, that was alluding to my naked body. Have I made you vomit yet?

Touring Around the World with Sienna Ray & Co.'s [wander|lust] Project

Aloha from Hawaii! I'm currently sitting on my sunburned behind, aka an Under-the-Sea themed colour-blocking trend story, in beluga-white and lobster-red. That's right, Karl. Two can play that game. Aside from the literal pain in the ass, I'm so excited to be wearing Spring clothing, and even more excited to be taking Sienna Ray & Co.'s "makayla" bag from the SS12 collection for a test drive, before it hits stores and as part of the brand's [wander|lust] project.

[wander|lust] is like the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, but better: it's with handbags and bloggers! Sienna Ray selected 24 fashion bloggers from around the globe to each spend a week with the makayla, before passing it on. Weekly activity posts will be presented on the [wander|lust] blog, including a pop-up interactive map that gives followers the ability to track where in the world the bags are currently located. So after the kicking, screaming, and prying from my infantile grip, we can all keep track of this bag's adventures, moving forward. Pretty cool, right? Right.

I took the makayla from Vancouver to Waikiki. I took her to the beach. And then out to dinner. I think I'm one of the best dates she'll ever have, and just like your crazy-ex on Facebook, I'll be able to stalk her every move online to make sure of it. Why so much creep, aside from the usual psychosis? At the end of the [wander|lust] project, there's a vote to see which blogger was the most awesome (well the blogger who gets the most votes, I'm assuming it's for awesomeness). The prize for being the awesomest is the opportunity to design a bag for Sienna Ray! Needless to say, I want to win. Will you choo choo choose me? More harassment about this later.

Project Runway All Stars: Episode 1 Recap and A HAUTE MINUTE with Elisa Jimenez

Spoiler alert! If you haven't seen Episode 1 of Project Runway All Stars... Stop. Then wiggle with it. Now stop. Then wiggle with it.

Last night marked the premiere of the new season of Project Runway, the All Stars edition. You knew this already, because you've read my interview with Season 2 contestant and current All Star, Kara Janx, that was posted yesterday, right? Good answer. On last night's episode, we meet all of the contestants, and the new host, supermodel Angela Lindvall. Right away we can tell she's no Heidi, but I'm willing to give her a chance. We also meet the new judges, Georgina Chapman and Isaac Mizrahi. To open the show, the contestants do a mini-fashion show for the judges, each showing one piece of their work. After watching a video message from Valentino and his business partner, Giancarlo Giammetti, the contestants are brought to a 99 cent store where Angela announces the challenge. It's the Unconventional Challenge! Each designer must design something using materials from the 99 cent store, with a one hundred dollar budget. But, there's a twist! The look must be inspired by the look that was already shown. Boom!

Materials are bought and brought back to the work room. Where's Tim Gunn? Surprise! Along with a new host and new judges, we're also introduced to the new mentor: Editor-in-Chief of Marie Claire magazine, Joanna Coles. I like Joanna. I love Tim (duh) but I like Joanna and I think that as a contestant, having the Editor-in-Chief of a major fashion magazine not only be aware of your existence, but advise your work, is an incredible opportunity. Moving on, time is up and everyone heads to the runway for a show and the subsequent elimination. In the bottom 3? Sweet P, Gordana and Elisa. We sadly say our farewells to Elisa, and she graciously accepts her fate.

The day after her elimination, Elisa spoke with me and a few other reporters on a conference call, about her early exit from Project Runway All Stars.

Why did you agree to do Project Runway All Stars and what was the best highlight from being back?

Elisa: It was a pivotal time in my own work. I needed something huge in my work, to shift my focus. The same day I did meditation was the day I got the All Star request. I wanted to be present this time. The first time I was timid about being verbal. The highlight was the people and getting to meet colleagues and other designers.

From your piece last night, how do you think Heidi, Nina Garcia and Michael Kors would have judged it?

Never thought of that. First, the shorts I made last night, which I'm crushing on and will be in my spring collection, were made out of a gift bag. But I can't really tell what the other judges would have thought to be honest. Michael Kors and Tim Gunn know my work. I thought it was a different voice. I respect Isaac, to have his compliment and his dialogue really meant a great deal because I was more connected with admiring his work. He's someone in fashion who has constantly reinvented himself in an industry that's very fickle.

Are there any celebrities you would love to design for?

I do have some celebrity crushes, like Mila Kunis. I think she is strong and beautiful. She is visually beautiful and I think she would work well in my clothes. I really like the supernatural genre on television and I would love to get into costuming. I think I could make some good wings.

You got some mixed messages last night from the judges. What do you make of the feedback?

I actually stand by the piece I did. There was a story on the wings and I didn't get a chance to defend myself on the runway because of me being nervous. The work stands for itself...very beautiful pieces don't need to be explained and I didn't think I should have to explain my work.

Elisa's eliminated design

There seemed to be a divide between the designers on how to perceive you and how you work. Is this true?

Absolutely. I do installation work. When working in a studio, every amount of space is a place to work. We did have specific stations to work at, but I made mine a petite little studio. I had a construction area, HP area, design area...the floor is a great cutting place.

Do you think your unconventional methods make it more difficult to compete?

My methods and ideologies make it difficult for people to understand the concept that something comes from it. I have come to accept the fact that I am with people who have a set of rules and I have my own...it makes me competitive. I have made a career for 17 or 18 years in a field that lets people in who only do it a certain way.

Is there anyone you're rooting for to win?

I'm going to actually try to do the challenges with the contestants as they go through, just because I want to do them. I'm rooting for Austin, though. Everyone is talented, obviously, but Austin has this incredible feeling for it - he's an intelligent, talented young man. But also, in the context of Project Runway, he was part of the first season and therefore is known to people who watch it. I think it would be really great for everyone if he were to win. I'm impressed by his intelligence. He's such a kind and talented gentleman and that's so rare.

A HAUTE MINUTE with Project Runway All Stars' Kara Janx

Riddle me this: One day you’re out, the next day... you’re in. It's Project Runway All-Stars, of course! After nine successful seasons, the Emmy Award-winning Project Runway series welcomes back thirteen unforgettable contestants from past seasons as an exciting new all-star cast. The All-Stars include Austin Scarlett (Season 1), Elisa Jimenez (Season 4), Rami Kashou (Season 4), Kathleen “Sweet P” Vaughn (Season 4), Jerell Scott (Season 5), Kenley Collins (Season 5), Gordana Gehlhausen (Season 6), Anthony Williams (Season 7), Mila Hermanovski (Season 7), April Johnson (Season 8), Michael Costello (Season 8), Mondo Guerra (Season 8) and Kara Janx (Season 2).

Season 2 fourth-place winner and current All-Star, Kara Janx, has had a successful career designing her namesake line following her first appearance on the show. Her designs have been featured in high-profile publications such as Elle, Harper's Bazaar, InStyle, Lucky, Vogue and WWD and worn by numerous style icons, including Rihanna, Emma Watson, and Olivia Palermo. Needless to say, she's kind of a big deal, so I was very excited to chat with her last week about the latest season of Project Runway and just how good all of the All-Stars are.

A Haute Mess: Why did you decide to return to Project Runway?

Kara Janx: You know, I swore it off forever. I swore that I would never get involved again because it’s so out of control, but when I got the phone call, I thought about how it’s just such an incredible opportunity and experience, that it was sort of hard to say "no" to, even though my initial reaction was like “hell no!” you know? “I’m not getting back into this”. I must be crazy.

How has your second experience on Project Runway differed from your first? Does knowing what to expect make the process any easier?

You sort of know what to expect but the whole pace of it is so grueling, that you kind of forget how lost in the shuffle you get, and how consuming it becomes. I mean, you’re kind of better prepared and more aware that the cameras are there, but when you really get into it, it’s still grueling and so hardcore.

Is it the timing that’s the most difficult, having only a day or two to complete a challenge?

It’s less than that between challenges, it’s so rigorous. It’s non-stop. This particular season -- and I can’t tell you too much -- but they turn the pressure cooker on in terms of time. Our times are hard. Because they know our capabilities, and probably figured “these kids have been through this, let’s turn up the heat!” you know?

As demanding as it is, what are the enjoyable aspects of being on Project Runway?

There are so many things I enjoy about being on Project Runway. I love the interactions with these really fun, amazing people that have the same mindset and mentality, and you make such good friends. I love that. I really love those friendships. I know that sounds so contrived, but it really is incredible how you gravitate to one another. I [also] love the design process, I love just being in that luxurious space of just designing, all the time. That’s your only worry, to design, and so I love that. It’s a luxury to have that when you work. And yeah, I love the craziness! I sort of thrive on the craziness.

It sounds like there’s a lot of camaraderie among the competitors, but is there anyone that you can say is your biggest competition to win this season?

Wow, it’s hard to tell. Austin, Mondo, Michael… you know, everyone is so incredibly talented, it’s anyone’s to win. One mess up, or one slip up... even amongst the most talented, could be their demise. But it’s anybody’s game to win because everyone is really good.

You're a ready-to-wear designer, and you also do special occasion and bridal dresses, and swimwear. Do you think having this multifaceted experience gives you an advantage over your competitors?

I understand the business of fashion, I really do, and I think that’s an advantage in the show and after the show. I don’t know if everyone can translate the success of the show into being a commercial success after the show, but it’s also hard for me because sometimes I am so commercially driven that I forget the artistic form, so we all sort of have our advantages and disadvantages.

What can fans look forward to this season? What about the drama?

[Laughs] Yes, drama! Good clothes, bad clothes… it’s such an elevated season. The level of talent is so high, it’s Project Runway on steroids. You won’t want to miss anything. It’s just incredible. We’re all just so blown away by how capable everybody is, there’s a lot of respect.

So there’s a good competition ahead!

Exactly, it’s just such a good competition. Everyone has their own agenda and insecurities and all that stuff, but everybody is just really good. There’s no one that you can look at and just think “oh my god, whatever” and not worry about them, but it’s like “Oh my god!!” [laughs].

Any last words for A Haute Mess?

Come buy clothes at Kara Janx, they’re so cheap right now! [laughs]. They’re a bargain! No, but, you know, I love the support and I just think that people really need to watch the show and the cast is really great. This season is out of control. You’re going to love it! It’s really a treat.

Casual Friday: Rag & Bone Feather Print Jeans

It's not often you see me tuck my love handles into a pair of skinny jeans, but this feather print pair from Rag & Bone/JEAN are an exception. Yuuuup -- FEATHER.PRINT. I've been living in these since I got them for Christmas and need to take a minute to sing their praises. The rise is just right. They don't stretch out, so the only saggy-bum I have in them are my actual buttocks. I tend to prefer poopy-pants, and coloured or printed trousers instead of ~~boring~~ typically neutral jeans, but Marcus and David have stolen my heart with their assortment of neon, cool prints and leather.

Sit DOWN, Mayan Calendar: These Fashion Folk have Bigger Plans for 2012

Every year, I make the same, boring New Year’s resolutions: to work out and eat healthier. Do I ever succeed? That depends on if you count drinking vodka-sodas and swaying on a pair heels on a dance floor (it’s a core workout, duh). Given my apparent sucking at making, and subjectively, following through, on New Year’s Resolutions, I decided to pose the question to some of my favourite fashionable friends across the continent to see what goals they’re setting for themselves this year. So I says to them, I says, “what is your New Year’s resolution?” while also subtly hinting that they best not have as lame an answer as my own. Here’s what they had to say.

“It's such a dumb resolution, but one of my goals is to embrace shoes in that weird realm between a flat and a stiletto. This is harder said than done since most two inchers look so damn matronly to me: they are sad shoes that can't decide whether to be high or low. Hate the kitten, hate the wedge. There must be something else... In 2012, I will scour the ends of the earth until I find the sexiest, sassiest stumpy pump. It will happen -- just watch me.”

I'm planning a trip to France next year and would love to be able to order a coffee en francais at a cafe in Paris! I am keeping it to a realistic two goals this year. As my last outfit of 2011 and first of 2012, it was only fitting that I wore a mullet dress, and after much debate as to which ones, really uncomfortable shoes. Nothing makes you feel more Hollywood than a cocktail dress, a ~~boring~~ pair of Louboutins, and, you know, my blossoming career as a television star -- just kidding. Since going Hollywood, I've decided to add to my photo repertoire, consisting mostly of The Renée Zellweger, and add a new-and-improved (and sex-tape-free) move I call, The Kim Kardashian. And Zoe Saldana. And Halle Berry. Who does it best?

Definitely not Halle. Or me.

Moving away from the imaginary red carpet and douchebaggery above, I hope you all had a great weekend celebrating the new year. The past year was a big one for A Haute Mess, and I'm excited for the upcoming year and the fun I'll have continuing to share it with you. Runway to Real Life: New Year's Eve Beauty Inspiration

New Year's Eve. It's expensive, anti-climactic, and you spend much of the night freezing cold and muttering profanities while waiting for a cab. Nevertheless, it's still special. Not only is this rebirth of the annum representative of our own new beginnings and resolutions for the future, but it's one of those rare occasions when us non-red-carpet-frequenting folk get to inject a little glamour into our lives. Thus, you find the perfect dress, the perfect pair of heels to pair with your perfect dress, and you plan your accessories accordingly. You're destined to look amazing on the eve of the New Year, but the pressure is on to make your face match the rest of you. Not that you're not already beautiful -- you all are: inside, outside and inside out -- but you want to amp up the wow! factor in that beauty regime of yours. Do-It-Yourself: A Neon & Crystal Bracelet

It's been a while since I've done a do-it-yourself post. Have you missed them? Please say yes. The reason for this absence is that I usually share my craftastic adventures via my posts for MTV, and admittedly, I haven't submitted one in a while. No, I wasn't fired for talking about boob-sweat, pit stains and the frequency of sloth procreation in my fashion week coverage -- I'm still contributing to FORA but in a much more exciting capacity: a coming-soon weekly column! More on this later, because a DIY post I have and here it is.

This neon crystal bracelet is inspired by this neon crystal cuff from Noir Jewelry. The key words being "inspired by" because as you can see, the inspiration is much nicer than the one I created. Nevertheless, the one I made is practically free, as opposed to $120, so let's call it even and get to it.

What you need to Do-It-Yourself:

Instead of clip-on earrings, you can use other crystals such as a brooch or old jewels. Anything that can be easily sewn to the ribbon, or better yet, glued to it, will work. However, you'll need to use a better adhesive than fabric glue, like hot glue, or if you're sewing, use clear thread.

Hold (or glue) one end of your ribbon to the inside of the bangle. Wrap the ribbon around the bangle (as in the image above) by looping it over the outside and back through the inside.

When the entire bangle is covered in ribbon, glue the ribbon's end to the inside of the bangle. Trim off any excess ribbon, and use only a drop or two of glue.

Clip your earrings to your bracelet and voila! You're all done. If the earrings you chose don't snap closed very tightly, glue the backs of the earrings to the inside of the bracelet. If you didn't use clip-on earrings, sew or glue whatever crystals or jewels you have chosen to the ribbon, but do use clear thread or a small amount of hot glue.

Terms in fashion that make me uncomfortable, Chapter 2: Winkle Pickers

Back by popular demand, it's time for another edition of Terms in Fashion that Make Me Uncomfortable featuring the most unfortunately named shoe in existence, The Winklepicker, or Winkle Pickers. I find that this separation of "winkle" and "picker" causes a dramatic increase in score on the scale of discomfort, thus, it's my version of choice. Winkle Pickers. What comes to mind when this term is used? Certainly not a style of shoe or boot featuring a long, pointed toe. Instead, upon hearing the term, I immediately make the assumption that this is a strangely endearing reference to a medical tool that I, as a female, would thankfully never need to encounter.

However, Winkle Pickers actually have nothing to do with male genitalia, aside from their history. You see, Winkle Pickers were inspired by the Poulaines (the long and exaggerated pointed toe) on shoes worn by male nobility in the Middle Ages. Much like pants, what began as a style worn exclusively by males, did not remain that way: on came the 1950s and women too could join in the winkle picking fun.

The original Winkle Pickers (and what could also be an illustration of winkle picking). Evidently, leggings worn inappropriately as pants also dates back to the Middle Ages.

In the middle of the 20th century, winkle pickers became popular in Britain among fans of that crazy music we call Rock & Roll. As the years progressed, the popularity of these shoes with pointed-toes grew like a pubescent teenager and have been worn by a variety of subcultures around the globe. Currently, winkle pickers are very popular among German goths (but typical of goth non-comformity, they call them "Pikes" ) and The Kings of Leon.

Let's get back to the issue at hand, the uncomfortable term: winkle pickers. Unlike The Pussybow, a reason exists for the terrible name given to these shoes. According to the most reliable source on the internet, Wikipedia,

The pointed toe was called the winkle picker toe because in England periwinkle snails (or winkles) are or were a popular seaside snack, which is eaten using a pin or other pointed object to carefully extract the soft parts out of the coiled shell, hence the phrase: "to winkle something out", and from that, winkle-pickers as a humorous name for shoes with a very pointed tip.

There you have it folks. Winkle pickers, in fact, have nothing to do with picking winkles, but are simply a style a footwear named by some freaks eating escargot via pin on the beach. This explanation has done absolutely nothing for my unease with the term and winkle pickers will forever remain a term in fashion that makes me uncomfortable.

Introducing Dover and the Two-Tone Trench Coat

Hello, friends. Surprise! It's me again. Guess what? I got a new trench coat from a brand new line of outerwear called Dover, by Karen Reinitz and Abigale Levinson, the designers of AKA New York. This inaugural collection may be small but it packs a big punch: each piece is a reinterpretation of a classic silhouette by incorporating fun and unexpected details, like leather sleeves, fur cuffs and bright jacquard panels. Needless to say, I'm picking up what they're throwing down: I would be very content with owning every single current piece of Dover available.

Riddle me this: what do me and Santa Claus share? Well it's definitely not my zero percent body fat or his voluminous curls, but our ability to be in every home at one time. He, delivering gifts and I, live on national television, as I was for the first time on Friday afternoon when CTV News invited me on a panel to discuss current happenings in the wonderful world of popular culture. Now that I'm a celebrated television star, I wanted to take you along a trip down memory lane, via Fiat, and drive through the Bronx to remind everyone that I'm still real, but apparently that's been done already. Instead, I'll go back to my roots as a fashion blogger and dish out some expert advice on what to wear for an appearance on the news. Please refer to the diagram ~~of female erogenous zones~~ below.

1. A smile, of course! You're on TV and your ego couldn't be more elated and inflated. Also, rehearse a boisterous laugh, for both your newsmates' anecdotes and your own.
2. A statement accessory, like this gold necklace. It's large and shiny enough to distract the viewers from the lack of intelligent things being said.
3. A shirt. Without one, an invitation for a return appearance is unlikely (although this does depend on which channel or program you're on, however, I recommend avoiding toplessness until your career is in shambles, see: Lindsay Lohan and Playboy).
4. A blazer. Have you ever seen a news anchor go blazerless? No. Because blazers mean business and so do you.

5. A small purse, to carry with you or keep stored under your news desk. If your blazer has room for the flask of your hard alcohol of choice (not pictured) you may skip this step (because you certainly won't be skipping the blazer, as already discussed).
6. A drop crotch. In case your nerves get the best of you, a harem pant will provide ample room for an adult diaper. I chose a cropped pair in faux leather.
7. Practical flats. Unless you're reporting on the weather, your shoes won't be on camera and comfort is key. You've already accepted the fact that you may soil yourself on live television, so really, wearing a pair of shoes for practicality's sake isn't going to hurt anyone.

Sometimes I like to play dress up in the best closet of all: the internet. I pulled together this print-heavy, colourful outfit with help from some of my favourite boys, Alexander Wang, Adam Lippes and Lazaro and Jack, for no reason: I just wish I was wearing it right now.

I went to Toronto this week for a really fun project I can't tell you about just yet (oh the suspense!) and I most enjoyed my short, but sweet, time in the city. I forgot my camera at home -- bad blogger! -- but I managed to snap a few pictures on my phone while I was there.

I was so excited to see the CN Tower and took a picture of it whenever I saw it. Then I realized that you can see it from practically anywhere downtown. Did you know that the CN Tower is taller than the Empire State Building? If you don't know, now you know.

Terms in fashion that make me uncomfortable, Chapter 1: The Pussybow

I've been threatening (via Twitter -- nothing crazy this time) to launch this new blog segment and when the outfit presented itself, so did the opportunity. Thus, please throw your hands together for the first chapter of Terms in Fashion that Make Me Uncomfortable, featuring this season's comeback kid, The Pussybow.

What is a "pussybow" you ask? Awkward and uncomfortable name aside, a pussybow is a large floppy bow tied at the neck of a blouse or dress, as seen beneath my horrified face and double chin pictured above. When I first discovered that this type of tie-neck did indeed have A. a specific name and B. this specific name, I wondered, "how could something so ladylike be called something so unfortunate?" Then the "aha" moment occurred and I realized, what is the most ladylike thing of all? Oh yes, I'm going there.

I sincerely hope that this relationship is nothing but a result of my own sick deduction, because otherwise, as you can see in the full-body photo above, the two seemingly have nothing else in common. fashion x philanthropy: the obakki foundation launches celeb auction to raise funds for sudan

Put your serious faces on, friends: it's time to get real for a post. I recently heard about a great philanthropic initiative that Obakki is launching next month and had to share it with you.
Next month, The Obakki Foundation is launching "The Rainmaker Auction", an online eBay auction to raise $200,000 to help fund the drilling of 200 water wells in South Sudan this December.

The auction runs from November 1st - 14th and features one-of-a-kind experiences as well as hundreds of signed auction items from celebs like Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Garth Brooks, Tiger Woods, Carrie Underwood, Katy Perry and more. New auction items will be released daily on the Obakki Foundation eBay account over the duration of the two weeks.

Treana Peake, the brand's Creative Director, founded the Obakki Foundation in 2009 to help provide clean water projects and educational development in Africa. As with all of the Obakki Foundation’s fundraising projects, 100% of money raised will go towards drilling the much needed water wells in Sudan. Projects start immediately and auction winners will quickly be able to see the impact their donations have created.

It's been a beautiful Fall in New York City thus far. These photos were taken a few weeks ago when the weather was still quite warm -- shorts and sandals in October warm. That's cray! says this waders-wearing Vancouverite. The climate here never ceases to amaze me: I froze my tits off last February, survived the boob-sweat hot summer and finally, have seen the city in weather I'm used to: mild! I'm sad to leave in a couple of weeks but alas, my home and native land and this handsome devil are calling my name.

This season, Style.com launched it's first ever Video Fashion Week -- an online release of original videos from 12 designers showcasing their Spring/Summer 2012 collections. These 12 designers were specifically selected to participate as they are leaders in fashion design yet don't traditionally do runway shows in New York, London, Paris and Milan. One of my favourite Australian brands, camilla and marc, created a beautiful short film for this project (directed by Errol Rainey and with music by Jan Tierson) so of course, I sniped it (in a legit way, I swear) to share it with you:

a coupla' must-haves

Without slamming you with the usual awkward photos of myself, I would like to share two of my "must-have items" for Fall with you (token cheesy fashion-speak count: 1). As you know from reading this here blog, I'm not very fond of wearing pants. I don't mean like Dolce & Gabbana SS12 pantslessness, but a personal preference for wearing skirts and shorts instead. Perhaps this is a result of having spent the majority of my life in a Catholic school uniform, like my usual disdain for velvet based on my past as a figure skater. Yes, it's true. I was a figure skating Catholic school girl. I can't believe people trust my take on fashion either. Nevertheless, I love me a good "fall short". Don't you?

I'm also not big on winter jackets simply because they tend to break the bank and I don't go a bank-breaking as much as I would like to. My cold-weather coat is usually the element of my wardrobe I am actually quite practical about as I invest in a piece that will be wearable for a few seasons: a neutral colour (typically black or navy) in a classic silhouette. "Boring!" says everyone. So this season, why not also invest in a fun and casual winter jacket in addition to the Boring one?

To summarize the disturbing anecdote about my childhood-induced adult affinity for going pantsless and my disappointment with my lack of indulgence in material goods above, two items I think you must have this Fall are seasonally appropriate shorts and a non-boring warm jacket. My must-have must-haves are this fair isle duffel coat by Smythe and these wool shorts from JNBY, below. Oh, and I know I am werqing the sex appeal like crayyy in this outfit. The key is the button-down shirt buttoned-up to the very top, it's super Phil Mickelson chic.

I've been talking a lot of game about Smythe lately (Oh Canada!) and this coat is a perfect example of why I love this brand so much. Although you may not be able to see it in the photos, the details on this jacket are incredible. The faux fur that lines the hood is so soft I can't believe it's not ~~butter~~ bunny, and the two clasps that close the jacket are are mounted with beautiful caramel-coloured leather.

And the shorts? I'm always a fan of JNBY. They're just what you'd want in a pair of seasonally appropriate shorts: wool but not itchy, short but not beachy, plus, there are enjoyable details like a 5-button closure on the right-side's seam and a pleated crotch.

If you follow me on Twitter or creep me on Facebook (you don't? This is awkward. Please do.) you already know that I love this velvet maxi dress from T by Alexander Wang. I'm typically not attracted to velvet pieces -- I blame this on my past as a figure skater (have you ever seen a giraffe on skates?) because I used to have to wear a lot of velvet costumery thus the development of my distaste for the fabric.

I've never been one to go cray for these big designer collabos -- paying $249 for an H&M quality dress? If I'm going to have to wait in line to enter a war zone, I would rather shop a sample sale to wear designer for less and go home with a higher quality garment. So this negative Nancy isn't really picking up what they're throwing down -- but I will say, how perfect is that gold metallic dress for New Year's Eve? Or for a future (or current, no judgement here) career as an escort? And I do love all of the colour and embellishment... I could get into this. Maybe.

This is what I wore on (my) Day 1 at Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week, which included hitting up shows by Helmut Lang, VPL, Vivienne Tam and Monique Lhullier, having my photo snapped and thus my ego inflated and sightings of Patricia Field, Wendy Williams, Mandy Moore and Julianne Hough. I just got this sweater from JNBY and in a crazy nastyass honey badger-like move I wore it on one of the hottest days of the past few weeks. And since my polka-dot top is as opaque as a glass of water (a simile and an oxymoron! Stay in school kids) my sweater puppies were literally sweating or my brassiere was on display for the now-blind people of Vancouver.

As you know, I've been repping a good man loafer for quite some time now. I was the sole (pun intended) flat-wearer rocking loafers at New York Fashion Week last February like all that was missing was Hugh Hefner's satin monogrammed bathrobe. The old man in me (don't be gross, ya pervs) has been waiting for this style to catch on and much to my delight, it has! Big time! LIVE at squamish: good music + festival style

Last weekend I headed up to LIVE at Squamish, a music festival presented by Virgin Mobile in a town about an hour outside of Vancouver: (you guessed it) Squamish. The line-up was awesome this year and featured some of my favourite artists like Metric, The Dudes, Girl Talk, Stars, John Butler Trio and a gaggle of local bands you should check out like Brasstronaut, The Zolas and Hey Ocean.

I obviously had my eyes on the style scene because I like to ~~judge~~ blog and lucky for me, my friend Katrina kindly took some amazing photos of the shows and the style so that I could share all this with you:

Festival Style: Tips from A Haute Mess that were Stolen from Other People's Outfits

Wear a jumpsuit. Why? Because I like them but look stupid in them, so I want to see more of them on you. Plus, onesies = you don't need to worry about losing any layers when you're stumbling around after a beer too many. PS. Cool lattice details get bonus points.

Bring a scarf. You can use it to sit on (instead of toting around a big blanket) and when it gets chilly post-sundown you can wear it as a wrap. And it looks cool tied to your bag when you're not using it. Fashion and function, people -- a win-win.

Sunglasses are key. Duhhh, it's bright outside. But sunglasses also make you look really cool, almost as much as smoking does. Just kidding, kids -- sunglasses aren't that cool. Just kidding. Insert anti-smoking PSA here.

Boots are your best friend. Festivals generally are dirty, can get muddy and sometimes cold at night. Plus, wearing boots you'll avoid those nasty sandal blisters, will be able to trek back to your campsite through the roughest terrain and easily sneak items on the fun list into the festival grounds... not that you would even think about doing that.

Wear long, loose layers. Maxi-dresses are a magical invention that keep you cool when it's hot out and warmer when it's cool out and they're comfortable. And sometimes it's nice to put the legs away and let the boobs come out to play, I'm just saying.

As you know, I love me a big, obnoxious print -- especially when it's paired with another one. Hence why Marc Jacobs' Fall 2011 collection brings a big, stupid smile to my face (kind of like the one you see below). And so, I dedicate this post to you, Marc, because obviously you read my blog.

just the tip with american apparel

Give me a break, it's American Apparel. Of course I had to use a weird sexual post title. And I'm talking about fingertips, ya pervs.

Ahem. So I'm pretty into American Apparel's NEON line of nail polish they're currently selling, having recently been introduced to it by the super steezy Jess of Fashion by Night. It pleasantly surprised me with its quality -- I hate really thin polish that takes a million coats or polish that chips really easily (surprise! I'm female) and this does neither. Throw in some awesome neon shades (I have it in "Neon Red" -- above, and below: bottom left) and these blasts in a bottle get one heck of a jubilant Zack Morris high-five.

Guess what? They're also cheap: $6 USD/$7.50 CAD (earth to American Apparel: you've got the exchange rate backwards). And I know this calls for a big Duhhhh, but: you can buy American Apparel's NEON polish at an American Apparel location near you.

1. So I got back from New York and surprise! I cut off all of my hair (and had those 3 inch roots taken care of). That's right, Jennifer Aniston. Two can play that game. Anyway, I really can't say this enough but if you're in Vancouver and are looking for someone to take care of your mane, you must go see my friend Calvyn at Style Lab downtown. Even if you're not looking for someone new... go see him anyway. You won't regret it.

2. After the biggest ordeal with Net-a-Porter and DHL, the Alexander Wang shoes I ordered back in December are finally mine. Floor length suede fringe shoes? You're crazy! Says the Oceanic climate of the Pacific Northwest. But like the crazy nastyass honey badger, I don't give a shit.

I popped down to (translation: took the subway, ran and arrived a sweaty mess) to Micky London's NYC showroom to check out the latest from the accessories line. I was immediately drawn to the oversized gold cuffs, painted bangles (I snatched up a cool studded one for myself -- with permission to, I swear) and the hand-painted scarves. They also have incredible infinity scarves with beaded, pearl or chain necklaces attached -- and if that's not cool, I don't know what is.

Micky London is the brainchild of the ultra-stylish brother and sister duo, Kabir and Abba Manchanda, who grew up in the world of fashion. I shared this photo via Facebook and Twitter a few weeks back, because I find my unintentional bitchface entertaining and I wanted to show off my current obsession, aka my neon, leather and snake print shoes (yeeeaahhh buddy!). I had VH1 on yesterday (God Bless America and the endless options for ~~good~~ tv) and a promo for the new season of Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew came on, and apparently, my BFFFM (best friend for five minutes) Bai Ling is a cast member this season. Anyway, ~~for lack of a better post~~, it inspired me to share this gem with you:

Last week I got to hang out at NYC boutique, Atrium, for a day of dress up and photoshoot fun. I was given free reign with their amazing inventory (which includes my favourites like IRO, Ash, Madison Marcus and more) to style a few outfits for myself in my theme of choice. And because Atrium has clothing and accessories for any and all styles and occasions, I decided to make that my theme -- oh how clever.

bluefly's fly eyes on eyefly

Last week, Bluefly.com launched their brand spankin' new eyewear boutique, Eyefly.com, and of course, a party was held to celebrate the new site. Everyone there was excited that Nicky Hilton was among attendees, but luckily, ~~the most important~~ another Niki (meeeee!) was also creeping around the party.

I loved the simplicity yet creativity of the party's setting, which was designed by Art Director/Set Designer Andrea Huelse. The space featured a chalk mural of people wearing eyeglasses shown on the wall upon entrance and a chandelier made out of actual glasses hung over the bar, which featured delicious cocktails by Kanon Organic Vodka (I enjoyed one, two, or maybe a few).

There were walls of Eyefly glasses for people to try on and another wall had projected four-eyed photos of familiar faces from the fashion world (alliteration, what!) shot by the infamous Tommy Ton, including Editorial Director Mickey Boardman and Stylist Dani Stahl (both pictured above).

julian louie and more clothes that look like pajamas

Like the last, This week's edition of clothes that look like pajamas (but aren't) also includes a little lesson in dressin' (but for real: not "wear shoes" and "cover your TNAs"). Today's tip is about mixing patterns and prints.

Since I dressed like a prehistoric cartoon character and posted these iPhone pictures, a lot of people have been asking me about mixing prints. The above examples are a whole lot of look -- so today I present you with something a little less aggressive, which is also the aforementioned Tip.

You don't have to be aggressive, be, be, aggressive, when mixing prints. A printed accessory, or two or few, will do!

These shoes also tell a tall tale of mixing prints and methinks Julian Louie was drinking some awesomesauce when he designed them for Aldo. Three different ikat prints -- a Pride? Get it? Pride of lions --> pack of cats --> 3 ikats? Don't worry, I hate me too -- in one, glorious 5-inch-heeled package.
